A massive uninterrupted void flows through the entire form allowing light to vertically reach its spaces. For one to travel through the space, one must physically experience the void by traversing through. This bright inviting core to the form allows visitors to feel comfortable and calm by being exposed to natural elements while also being privately enclosed. All spaces connect to the void so users are able to feel connected with their natural surroundings in every space. The bottom of the void is the threshold connecting this private bright experience to the busy and chaotic surroundings. Traveling up through the void, one is brought closer and closer to a private and calm experience of natural surroundings, and further away from the bustling city at the bottom. On the exterior, the large monolithic form is raised to reveal the entrance into this bright and inviting void. While intimidating from afar, as one approaches the geological structure, they are met by a street-level entrance that forms a relationship with the people around the library. This illuminated entrance invites people and intrigues them to experience the space inside.
The Library is a steel-frame structure that is centered around massive cores suspending the lighter parts of the structure. The massive cores are placed towards the south part of the site against the existing building. These heavier parts hold up the remaining building with thinner tension beams. Less structure is required moving further from these cores because there is less material and mass in the void. The structure is carefully designed to keep the void free from any obstructing structure.
